愈失其真；
愈是踐踏，
愈離其心。
然後，
最模糊的，
不是受膜拜的畫像，

The Blurred Confucius

He stands upon two millennia of history,
his brows flowing like rivers,
his headscarf drifting like mist.
His features are indistinct,
leaving only the outlines once traced again and again.
Some lift him onto a sacred pedestal;
some smash him into pieces.
The higher he is raised,
the further he drifts from truth;
the harder he is struck,
the further he falls from his own heart.
And so,
what is most blurred
is neither the worshipped portrait
nor the shattered statue,
but the distance, the neglect,
the quiet indifference.
曖昧なる孔子
彼は二千年の史冊の上に立つ。
眉鬚は川のごとく、
衣巾は霧のように漂い、
その容貌は朧で、
かつて幾度も写し取られた輪郭だけが残る。
ある者は彼を聖壇に捧げ、
ある者はそれを粉々に砕く。
高く掲ぐれば掲ぐるほど、
その真に遠ざかり、
踏みにじれば踏みにじるほど、
その心から離れていく。
そして、
もっとも曖昧なのは、
崇拝される肖像でもなく、
砕かれた彫像でもなく、
距離と、無関心と、
静かな黙殺である。
