The Alllgae-style illustration Childhood Companions, inspired by the Song-dynasty painting Winter Play of Children, reimagines its playful spirit through minimalist linework, capturing fleeting moments of joy that later settle into an inescapable ache between the brows.

Childhood Companions

.

The wind lifts our little flags,
and carries days and months away.

I scampered,
you burst into giggles.
In those moments you chased and I dodged,
we never knew they were precious.

Only when looking back
do I sense those smiles,
those footsteps,
those calls of my name
already light as a cool breeze,
distant as drifting clouds.

Joy once thrown about so freely
has now, between my brows,
settled into a loss I cannot escape.
