A sea fog rose without warning,
and for days, did not lift.
Silent eyes,
still as cannons held at the ready;
heavy uniforms
pressed flat the very space for negotiation.
Then—
the chains of centuries could only be undone,
and, astonishingly,
the white mist around them gave way.

海の霧、驟かに立ち、
幾日も晴れず。
沈黙のまなざし、
発射を待つ砲身のごとく静まり、
重き軍服は、
交渉の余地を押し潰した。
